Monsterous CaveThere’s a monsterous cave a few miles down the highway from my mom’s property which Sarah has never seen so we decided to check it out.

Crawling to the Cave

THE HIKE: If you ever want to see it when you’re driving through Montana on I-90 take the exit for Lewis and Clark Caverns (US-287) a few miles outside of Three Forks. At the Y take MT Highway 2. In about 2 miles watch to your right, you’ll see the big cave looming. You park at the nearest pull-off to the cave and take the trail to the left where you’ll find a hole in the cliff line. You have to get down on your stomach to get through the passage here, but from there you can follow a trail to the right to the cave.

Big CavernThe big limestone cavern is well over fifty feet high. Down beneath it is a mine shaft with a climbing route along it. My brother claims the mine was dug by Chinese miners who went prospecting after working the mines in Butte.

The Mine

The cave above though looks all natural to me, though I’m no geologist. Walking inside of it you lose all sense of perspective, and if there happen to be doves around, their coos echoing from the great empty walls of rock, you feel like you’ve stepped into another world.
